GREECEFULLY KETO

THE KETOGENIC DIFFERENCE

If I had to give a brief definition of the Ketogenic (short for Keto) Lifestyle, I would say that "Keto is about overall health and loss of body fat".  Simply put, once your body enters the stage of "ketosis" it starts burning fat instead of carbohydrates (primarily sugars and starches found in grains, milk and milk products).   Yes, fruits and vegetables also have carbohydrates but they are the "good" kind.  The absence of grains makes the Ketogenic lifestyle  gluten free, therefore it is beneficial for people with Celiac disease and the absence of grains and sugars also makes it beneficial for people with Diabetes.

There are many studies about the health benefits of Keto, but I will only talk about my own issues and how Keto help me cure my own medical issues.  Now, let's clarify something, I am not a doctor, a dietitian or a nutritionist.  Everything I share is based on my own experiences.  I am not trying to convince you to follow the ketogenic lifestyle, that will be your choice and you should also clear it with your doctor.

I will share my journey on my blog, what worked and what didn't. I will be sharing recipes that I love and a lot of Greek recipes I grew up with that I have "ketofied".  Did anyone say "Mousaka", "Gemista" (stuffed vegetables) and "Baklava"?  Oh yeah.... you can have the keto version which is even more delicious.  I will talk about intermittent fasting, that I practice for almost a year now, running, rowing and cycling.  Passions... passions... passions!

MY STORY

Keto has changed my outlook towards food. I am no longer ashamed of eating, I’m no longer ashamed of saying that I love food and I can eat.  I enjoy every meal.  I don’t even blink ordering a big juicy steak.  My only concern is if I will be able to finish it!

It’s funny to say that but Keto put my life in perspective.  Intermittent fasting was another big discovery that had so many benefits for me, especially in my running!

The Inspiration Behind Greecefully Keto!

I was born and raised in Athens, Greece, but you already know that.  I am named after my grandmother, from my dad’s side and she was the only grandparent I was lucky enough to meet.  She lived with us and was a great cook.  I remember coming home from school and the whole staircase would smell heavenly, inviting you to open the door and devour every dish on the table.  One dish I remember, not only its taste but I feel like I can still smell it was her oven baked beef patties with oven roasted potatoes (Biftekia me patates).  It seems that in the 1950s she started writing down her recipes as well as recipes she tried and liked.  That book still exists and I’m the proud owner of it!

In the early 80s, Sarah Kay was a popular cartoon character in Europe, and like any other girl my age, was obsessed with her.  I remember collecting stickers, erasers, pencils and one day I came across a large notebook with images of Sarah Kay all over its cover!  This was it, that notebook was destined to become my own cookbook.  I was always watching my mom cook and eventually I started writing down her recipes.  Both notebooks survived all those years and I am now the keeper of my family recipes. Fifty years of wisdom of the most influential women in my life.

Greek food is absolutely delicious and many would argue that the Mediterranean diet is healthier than others.  I am not here to debate which diet or lifestyle is better or healthier, after all, I am not a nutritionist, a dietician or a doctor.  I am only telling you about Keto, because it works for me.

The Ketogenic Diet became my lifestyle since September 2018.  I made it my mission to ketofy Greek food, starting from my family recipes, and this is how Greecefully Keto was born!
